Shareholder Filings Detail Why MRAK Was Removed From Afterlife’s Parent Company

MRAK is no longer a managing director of Karmat Music GmbH, the Berlin company behind Afterlife. Shareholder minutes filed with the Berlin commercial register show that Anyma (Matteo Milleri) and co-founder Aurelia Ortiz voted on August 6, 2026 to remove Carmine Conte from the role with immediate effect. The commercial register recorded the change on August 17.
The filing adds detail to MRAK’s exit from Afterlife, which EDMTunes reported on September 29. It also clarifies what the resolution did and did not do. Conte was removed from management, but the same filing continues to list him as a 30% shareholder. Nothing in the resolutions addresses his ownership stake.
Two meetings, one vote
Karmat is split four ways. Ortiz, Milleri and Conte hold 30% each, and Italian company SIPAL S.p.A. holds the remaining 10%.
Ortiz first called a meeting for July 9 with Conte’s removal on the agenda. Only she and Milleri were represented, which put 60% of the share capital in the room against the 75% quorum Karmat’s articles require. Nobody showed up for Conte or SIPAL, so no vote was taken.
Karmat’s articles allow a second meeting with the same agenda to pass resolutions no matter how much capital attends. Ortiz called it for August 6 at the company’s Berlin offices. That morning, lawyers for Conte and for SIPAL each told the chair by phone that they would not attend.
Ortiz and Milleri then passed two resolutions, both 15,000 votes to zero. The first removed Conte for cause. The second removed him again, which the chair described as a precautionary resolution independent of the first.
What Karmat alleges
The reasons are set out in the July 9 meeting notice sent to SIPAL, filed as an annex to the minutes. According to Karmat, Conte and his advisers worked with SIPAL to help it obtain an enforceable court order against the company. The Regional Court Berlin II issued that decision on May 20, 2026 (case 103 O 41/26) over SIPAL’s claim to company information, a claim Karmat says did not exist or existed only in part.
The notice says Karmat had already hired a lawyer to fight SIPAL’s petition and had coordinated that defense with Conte. A second lawyer, claiming to act on Conte’s instructions, then acknowledged SIPAL’s claim on Karmat’s behalf. Karmat also alleges Conte downloaded company documents on a large scale through his access to its systems and offered to provide them to SIPAL.
These are Karmat’s allegations. The notice does not allege that Conte actually handed over any documents, and the filing does not include a court finding on his conduct. The chair recorded that Conte did not respond to the allegations before or during the meeting, and EDMTunes found no public statement from MRAK as of publication.
How Afterlife got this big
Conte and Milleri met studying sound engineering in Milan in 2008 and moved to Berlin as Tale Of Us a year later. Tale Of Us GmbH registered the company in Berlin in October 2015, and it adopted the Karmat name in January 2016. Afterlife followed that year, with the compilation Realm Of Consciousness out on June 24, 2016.
Afterlife never operated like a typical label. The releases and the parties were one project, built around melodic techno, the falling man logo and visuals that drew as much attention as the DJs. By 2018 its Ibiza residency had moved to Hï Ibiza, with both rooms given custom production and visual artist Quayola working on the design. The format then went to Tulum, São Paulo, Barcelona and three nights at Brooklyn Mirage in 2023, and picked up a fan base that travels for it.
The biggest stage came in Las Vegas. Afterlife presents Anyma: The End of Genesys opened at Sphere on December 27, 2024 as the venue’s first electronic music residency. Sphere says the first eight nights sold out, and the run closed with four final shows ending March 2, 2025.
Where it came apart
As the solo projects grew, the duo’s shared bookings shrank. Tale Of Us played Afterlife Tulum in January 2025. When Afterlife Barcelona ran on June 13 and 14 that year, Anyma curated the Friday and MRAK curated the Saturday, with no Tale Of Us set on the bill. Neither artist has announced the end of Tale Of Us.
Anyma’s ÆDEN era
Anyma spent 2026 building his career under his own name. He debuted his ÆDEN show on Coachella’s main stage at midnight on April 17 after high winds canceled his Weekend One set, and he brought out LISA for ‘Bad Angel’ alongside Joji, Matt Bellamy of Muse, and Swae Lee. The ÆDEN World Tour followed, along with a Tuesday residency at [UNVRS] Ibiza from June 9 to September 15.
On August 11, five days after the vote, Milleri launched ÆDEN Records through Interscope/Virgin. Its first single, ‘Other Dimension’ with Volkoder, arrived August 14 ahead of the compilation ÆDEN: Digital Renaissance Vol. I. The label announcement did not mention Afterlife.
MRAK’s Smoke EP came out on Afterlife in July 2025. Following Conte’s removal as managing director, Milleri and Ortiz are the company’s remaining managing directors. Neither the parties involved nor the company have publicly commented on the filing, and Karmat has not disclosed what comes next for Conte’s 30% stake, the SIPAL dispute, or Afterlife’s event calendar.
